Separate Layers splits an image into its background, its objects and its text, each on its own layer. You can then move, resize, hide or reorder layers, add new ones, or ask for a change on a single layer without touching the rest, and save the result as a new image.
Who can use it
All plans.
Where to find it
Studio > open any image in your project > Separate layers.
To start from a file on your computer: Studio > Tools > Separate Layers, then upload the image.
How to use it
Open an image and click Separate layers (or upload one in Studio > Tools > Separate Layers and click the arrow).
On "Separate this image into layers", click Separate layers. Separating takes a minute or two. You can leave, and reopening "Separate layers" on the image brings you back at no extra cost.
In the Layers panel, drag layers to reorder them, click the eye to hide or show one, double-click a name to rename it, or download a single layer.
On the canvas, pick a layer to move or resize it.
To change one layer, select it, describe the change (for example "Brighter, warmer, another take…") and send. Use the arrows to go back to earlier versions of that layer.
To add a layer, click + and choose Text, Upload (an image from your library), Generate (describe an object, which is drawn on a transparent background) or Background (a color).
Click Save. The result is saved to your project as a new image.
Options
Text layers: edit the text, font, size, bold and color
Background layers: pick a solid color
Generated layers: created from a short description, on a transparent background
Layer versions: every change keeps the earlier versions so you can switch back
Credits
Separating an image: 48 credits, whatever the number of layers. Reopening an image you already separated is free.
Changing a layer or generating a new layer: free while your workspace has free daily images, then 8 credits (12 credits for a square layer; new generated layers are square).
Moving, resizing, hiding, text, background, uploads and saving: free.
Where it works
Studio (images in a project, or an uploaded image)
Limitations
Images only, up to 30 MB.
An image is split into up to 17 layers. The number depends on the image.
To save, at least one layer must be visible, including a background layer.
A layer and a separated image can't be separated again.
